The Discount

I’m into couponing…I own about 20 bottles of fabric detergents and another 20 bottles of fabric softeners. My closet is bursting with toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, body wash, shampoo, and toilet paper all acquired through coupon deals. The ultimate deal was Millie’s funeral services. Did you know that if your deceased loved one is a child, you get a discount at the funeral home? Well, I sure didn’t.

The coordinator who helped us at the funeral home the day we went to make the arrangements was very professional and sweet. I remember walking in next to my husband and alongside my sister and Millie’s godfather to talk about Millie’s services. I was trying hard not to cry, pushing the thick, dry knot in my throat way back. My nose hurt, my eyes burned as we sat in the conference room discussing Millie’s cremation.

I had one request for the coordinator. I asked her to please pick Millie up from the morgue at the hospital. I didn’t want her to be in the cold morgue. I wanted her to be in the funeral home. I’m unsure why that made me feel better but it did. Something about having her out of the hospital felt important to me. The coordinator made it very easy and seamless. After hearing my request, she said to me, “I’ll handle that today.”

Honestly, I was a bit worried about the price of the services. I have always heard how expensive these types of services are. My brother offered me a substantial amount of money to cover Millie’s funeral. I remember he called me one morning and said he would give me 8k for the services. How sweet. But there was no need. All it cost was about $900. What a deal, right?
